Rubber Roof Maintenance
If you’re like me, you probably dread climbing the ladder to inspect and clean your RV’s roof. Whether you have a motorhome, travel trailer or fifth wheel your roof should be cleaned 3-4 times a year (more depending on where it is stored or if parked under trees frequently.) Do not use any products that contain petroleum solvents, harsh ingredients or citrus ingredients on your rubber roof. these cleaners can permanently damage rubber or vinyl surfaces and most likely void the warranty. A mild soap and water with a medium-bristle brush should be used as well as a good rubber roof conditioner available at our parts department. After it’s clean, inspect all vents, seams, and air conditioning covers while you’re up there.
At the Bretz RV & Marine Priority Parts Department, we recommend ProTec RV Rubber Roof Care System
This innovative 2-step Roof Care System is a must-have for every RV owner! Protects your rubber roof against the elements to reduce roof chalking and minimize maintenance. Contains a gallon of Camco Rubber Roof Cleaner and a gallon of Camco Rubber Roof Protectant.
Tips for the RV Holding Tank
With all the enjoyable aspects of RVing comes the less pleasurable chores such as holding tank maintenance. Here are a few tips to make this chore a little more bearable:
- Use the heavy duty sewer hoses. They don’t cost much more and they hold up better.
- Have a 10′ & 20′ hose on hand. Depending on your distance to the dump site, you should have the right length of hose.
- Do not pull or drag the sewer hose on the ground. This will cause it to tear or get pin holes in it.
- Use a sewer hose support to get a hood angle from the RV to the dump site so the tank will drain properly.
- Never dump black water until the tank is at least 2/3 full so the weight and volume will force the contents to drain properly.
- Do not leave your black water valve open and expect the toilet to work like your toilet at home.
- Dump your black water first, then your gray water to help flush your sewer hose out.
- Treat your tanks with enzyme-based chemicals not formaldehyde-based to assist in controlling odors and to break down solids.
- Use only quick dissolve toilet paper to avoid tank sensors getting blocked and your tank backing up.
- If your trailer is equipped with a black tank flush system, attaching a water hose and flushing the tank as you empty it is a very good way to keep your black water tank clean.
